Restoring Courage

Several months ago, the local Jewish weekly here in Los Angeles published an editorial listing those whom they considered anti-Semites.

Glenn Beck was at the top of the list.

Karen and I looked at eachother bewildered but at the same time we understood that the creature who authored this editorial is a secular Jew whose true religion is left-wing Democrat ideology, Obama worship, and, sigh, social justice--code for Socialism.

Glenn Beck and those who support him are doing more for Israel and the Jewish people than our dopey local Jewish paper has ever done in all the years it's littered the streets of Los Angeles. In fact, this not so-Jewish-weekly--a give-a-way, no one would pay for it--financed by hard-lefties from Brentwood and Beverly Hills, often bears a startling resemblance to official Palestinian propaganda.

Let me put this bluntly: I, an Orthodox Jew, have more in common with Glenn Beck and other pious Christian Zionists than I do with most liberal secular Jews.

I have theological differences with my Christian friends--but our core values are identical.

However, not only do I have theological differences with liberal secular Jews but our most cherished values exist in parallel and ultimately irreconcilable worlds.

Why has Beck gotten things right that so many others have missed or distorted? There are five key reasons: Common sense; courage; knowing the difference between right and wrong, willingness to learn, and readiness to admit when one has been wrong. These are virtues often lacking among those with more elegant reputations and impressive diplomas.

What has he gotten right?

1. The main threat in the Middle East is revolutionary Islamism and the United States must combat it.

Revolutionary Islamism includes on its side: Iran, Syria, Hizballah (largely controlling Lebanon), Hamas (governing the Gaza Strip), and the Muslim Brotherhood as well as al-Qaida and, more subtly, the regime governing Turkey. It is an ideology innately hostile to the West, the United States, and Israel. It cannot be bought off or moderated. Revolutionary Islamists will either take over the Middle East or be defeated.
