The school year is coming to an end and it dawned on me last week that it would be the last PTA meeting of the year! It also dawned on me that my oldest "baby" is going to "Middle School".
I wish they didn't call promotion from 5th to 6th grade anything special. It puts pressure on kids and parents. When I went to school it was "Grammar" school, K through 8 and then, High School.
My daughter's had more "Sex Ed" classes than I had Driver's Ed classes! When I was a kid it was called: "Health!"
I'm archaic. I learned to spell without Spellcheck! I have to get with the times and hear kids conversations switching from dolls to pregnancy...at the tender age of 11!
I think it's too much, too soon but I must prepare for the future. This includes my daughter bringing her COMPUTER to Middle School. She could just bring her "flash drive" but imagine how her peers would react if she didn't have a laptop in her "luggage" that is replacing her backpack?
I'm forced to listen to "hip" parents discuss how they never "write with pens" anymore and it's intimidating. (Am I the only one using a pen?) One mom explained her disdain for pens as it "hurts her hand to write" and she "can't wait until books are replaced by "Kindles" because books are cumbersome and outdated." I suspect that turning a sheet of paper will give THIS mom "Tennis Elbow!"
I read that the human head weighs 10 pounds and that children are suffering from neck problems from constantly looking down while texting and playing video games on cell phones and IPhones and I can believe it!
MY hands are KILLING me from typing! And the beauty of "Spellcheck" is no great feat! YOU STILL HAVE TO PROOF AND KNOW HOW TO SPELL! Parents argue that Spellcheck helps kids how to spell...I disagree. A SPELLING BEE will help!
I'm on Facebook, Twitter, etc. so I'm in touch with people I have no intention of ever seeing again in life. Recently, my 4th Grade teacher connected with me and that connection for me is the soul beauty of "Social Media."
I'm not such a dinosaur but I do think that think Sex Ed in a private school can wait until 6th grade. One more year with American Girl Dolls (at those prices!) won't hurt and kids need to stay kids...just a little longer.
I leave you with this, as I have to finish this column and check into my LinkedIn account, my Facebook pages and of course my never-ending roster of e-mails! Thank you G-d for GPS, as I can't live without it! I hope you feel the same way about Virtual Jerusalem! We tell you like it is, was and what it's going to be! Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend holiday and Chag Sameach!
