Where Were You On June 7, 1967?

Moshe Katz, age 65

Moshe Katz, 65, was born in Jerusalem, but was living in Tel Aviv in 1967.

Moshe recalls, "It was the middle of the Six Day War, they were not easy days. I was a policeman, and I was working on the night shift all of that week. I was in shul praying when somebody came in and brought the news. It passed around the shul from one to another very quickly. You could sense the excitement as people became informed. I suspected that something was happening with the fighting in Jerusalem, but I tried not to raise my hopes until I was sure of anything. When I heard the news that our soldiers had captured Jerusalem, I prayed for thanks. We knew that we were living through a very important day in our people's history."

A few days later Moshe came to Jerusalem with his wife and those of his children who were already born, "I saw the wall for the first time in my life, I wept for joy. My wife tells me that I kept repeating 'We have done it, Baruch Hashem, we have done it.' There were thousands of people there, not just soldiers, families came together, the place was packed, though it was not noisy but surprisingly quiet. Of course the Kotel was not then, as it is today, there was no beautiful courtyard area. But it made no difference to us."

Moshe has seen many changes in Jerusalem over the years. The city of his youth has become larger, busier and 'much, much cleaner'.
