A "Kid's Eye" Look at the Haggadah: Page 3

Kadesh | Urchatz | Karpas | Yachatz
Maggid | Rachtza | Motzi | Matza
Maror | Korech | Shulchan Orech
Tzafun | Barech | Hallel | Nirtzah

Maror
After we eat our matza, each person takes some maror (either horseradish or Romaine lettuce), dips it in the charoset, and says the bracha for the special mitzvah of maror:
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, Asher Kidishanu BeMitzvotav, V'tzivanu Al Achilat Maror.

Korech
Because it says in the Bible that we should eat matza and maror together, the great Rabbi Hillel used to make a sandwich and eat them together. We follow his custom and also make a sandwich.

Shulchan Orech
In Hebrew, shulchan orech means a "prepared table." For us, it means the meal is starting! Betai'avon! Bon Appetit!

After the meal is finished, the next part is one that all children like - the search for the afikomen!

Afikomen means "dessert" and it is the last food we eat on the night of the Seder. The afikomen represents the Passover sacrifice that was eaten in the days of the Temple. Since it is a mitzva to eat the afikomen, the grown-ups must have some. That is how the custom for the children to hide the afikomen began. After the children hide it, they ransom it back to the adults.

There are two customs for hiding the afikomen. The first way is for the children to "steal" the afikomen from the leader of the Seder, and then selling it back in exchange for the promise of a gift. The other way is when the parent hides the afikomen, and the children try to find it. Whoever finds it, wins a prize.

An Alternative Activity:
After the children hide it, the adults can really look for it, and only offer the ransom when they can't find it.

Tzafun
Everyone eats the afikomen.

Barech
A third cup of wine is poured. Everyone recites the Grace after meals together. After the grace, drink the third cup.

Cup for Eliahu Hanavi -
A special cup of wine is poured for Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah, the Prophet).

Question:
Who is Eliahu HaNavi? Why do we want him to join us?

Answer:
Eliahu HaNavi was a prophet who saw many faults in the Jewish people. They were true faults, but still he wasn't able to appreciate fully all of the good things about the Jewish people. Today, we invite him to many of our festive occasions including brit milah and the Seder. We want him to see how the Jewish people work hard to keep Judaism alive.

Shfach Chamasecha - Pour out your wrath upon the nations . . .
Throughout history, Jews have had enemies who wanted to hurt them, and often succeeded. They would say all kinds of lies in order to damage the reputation of the Jews, including that on Pesach, Jews used the blood of Christians to make matza. This is called the "blood libel." Sometimes, a dead body was even left next to a Jewish home. This is one of the reasons we open our door - we want to see if anyone is outside, plotting against us.

Hallel -
A fourth cup is poured, and we finish saying praises for God.

The 4th cup is poured and drunk.

Nirtzah
At the very end of the Seder (if you're still awake!), we say that we are still looking forward to the final redemption - a time when Jerusalem will be rebuilt. Then we say - Hashana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim! Next year in Jerusalem! We hope that by next year, all the Jews of the world will celebrate in rebuilt Jerusalem.

Question:
What does that mean, "rebuilt Jerusalem"? Today, Jerusalem is a bustling city of several hundred thousand people. How much more built can it get?

Answer:
Jews hope for a day when peace will reign throughout the world, and within Jerusalem, the Holy Temple will be rebuilt, and all people throughout the world will be free. This will be the final fulfillment of the Exodus.

Then we sing Pesach songs, including: Ki lo na'eh, Adir Hu, Echad Mi Yodea? and Chad Gadya until we go to bed. . .

Hag Sameach! Happy Holiday! Laila Tov! Good night!
