Between the groggers at the Megilla reading, the noise at the Purim Carnival, and music at the Purim Feast, you better get your ear plugs out!
Music, and just plain noise, enjoy a venerable history on Purim. From Talmudic times when children exploded saltpeter in the bonfires that burned Haman effigies, to the Purim operettas of Rennaissance Italy, to VJ's J-Rock Purim Special -- Purim is not for the noise-sensitive!!
Some of the noise is our way of eradicating Haman. During the Megilla reading, groggers drown out the name of Haman. Or you can "Boooo,"
"Hisss"
or make the appropriate animal noises.
But at least as much as we want to eradicate Haman, it's fun to make noise! And Purim is, well, a time for fun. . .
