Generally, we decorate the Sukkah with natural, growing things, similar to the way it was made during the time of our ancestors. Today, many people also decorate their Sukkah with paper decorations. Here are a few decorations that are simple and fun to create:

String Decorations:
Create "food chains" to be hung from one corner to the Sukkah to the other. They can be made from many different types of foods and natural materials, as long as they will stay fresh throughout all eight days of the holiday. Here are some suggested decorations:

  • Cranberries/
    other berries
  • Crabapples
  • Popcorn
  • Peanuts
  • Peppers
  • Onions
  • Small Eggplants
  • Corn Stalks
  • Gourds
  • Cattails
  • Pinecones
  • Evergreens
  • Wild Flowers
Suggestions:

  • Connect products with a strong line, like a fish line
  • Use thread and needle for smaller items
  • Create chains using combinations of similar products (like fruits with other fruits) to form clusters or patterns
  • Some products will stay fresh longer if they're sprayed with hair spray or plastic sprays.

Let your imagination wander - take a walk outside and find interesting natural products to decorate your Sukkah!

Leaf/Design Chain
Make continuous rows of leaves or your own original designs the following way:

  • Measure the length of the Sukkah, and fold narrow strips of construction paper, in accordion fashion, that length (you'll have to tape a number of sheets together - you can use more than one color).
  • Draw a leaf or any other design onto the first fold - you can either design your own, copy from a picture, or find natural leaves or other materials to trace. Draw in the direction you were folding, making sure to draw the bottom of the design at the fold.
  • Cut out the drawing, making sure not cut at the fold.
  • Open carefully - you now have an original chain!
