"And when you arrive in the land, plant
all manner of fruit trees. . . ."
Leviticus 19:23
An Old-New Custom
Inspired by an ancient practice, the Jews who
returned to the Land of Israel in modern times
instituted the custom of planting trees on Tu
B'Shvat.
On this day, Israelis of all backgrounds head outdoors. The smells of damp earth,
moistened by the winter rains, mingle with the fresh smells of young plants. Forest and
field are filled with thousands of children digging
holes and packing dirt around tender seedlings.
While the Jewish people have reaffirmed their
connection with the earth, the earth embraces the
young trees. In a few years, these trees will cover
the hills with green forests.
