Rabbi Slams Clinton's Criticism of Orthodox Policy Towards Women Follow Virtual Jerusalem on and Date Posted: 2011-12-06 16:15:53
Israeli Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar slammed Hillary Clinton for the U.S. secretary of state's criticism of the haredi Orthodox establishment in Israel's treatment of women. "She has no real knowledge of a Jewish woman's modesty," Amar told the haredi Orthodox Kol Barama Radio station in an interview Monday. "The Jewish people respect women and treat them like queens and princesses." Amar also said that segregating men and women on buses is not required by Jewish law, but is done by people who chose to be stricter in their observance. The rabbi said he does not oppose women singing in the Israel Defense Forces, but that the request to allow religious soldiers to leave during a recent performance "politely and without any humiliation of course, as the Torah does not insult anyone and respects women," was not unreasonable. Clinton over the weekend during a closed session of the Saban Forum in Washington reportedly rapped the marginalization of women in Israel, citing the examples of religious Israeli soldiers leaving programs that feature women singing and women sitting in the back of the bus on some religious bus lines. If Clinton had learned from "the right people, scholars, she would see that the Jewish people respect their women," Amar said.via jta.org

Christain, Jew, Whatever. Modesty in a woman AND a man is purely biblical. WHether you read the Old Testament or the New or BOth. We are instructed to be modest, to obey the laws ( choices people)
GOd does not force Himself on anyone, it is all about choices.
As a Christain and a woman, I admire them for the beliefs they stand up to.
Adn Nigel, yes there are more important things to be upset about, Like whether or not you are ready to meet your creator

Whatever can Mrs. Clinton be (I dislike her totally anyway), she is alas founded to criticize these Sephardic archaic people about their behavior toward girls, the Jews themselves are protesting against..
A great luck they are a tiny minority...They just don\'t lapidate women anymore...Otherwise we would suffer exactly so much as from the Muslims...

\"She has no real knowledge of a Jewish woman\'s modesty\" - women who dress modestly are to be commended for this. It makes it much less likely for men to lust after her. If American women knew what immodest dress does to the minds of men, they would dress modestly as an act of charity towards their brothers and men, so that they are not tempted to look and have lust in their hearts. What man would want other men to lust after his own wife?

Ms. Clinton says nothing about how Arab nations and Muslims countries treat their women.

Look whose mouth that statement came out of. I am not surprised at her defamation of Israel\'s character. I don\'t beleive that she is a friends of Israel nor the Jewish People. She is simply showing her true identity. She is, afteral, a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Nothing she or any other representative of the Obama administration says surprises me. I am not that sharp, but I knew prior to the election that these people would not welcom Israel as an ally. Let the intellectual Jews in the US go on dreaming of their \"perfect world.\" They can\'t get it right and neither can the Obama administration. I am not a Republican or a Democrat. I call them the way I see them. Maybe just an independent thinker....

I am a Christian who support the Jewish people. I Hope that woman are considered equal everywhere. Even in revelations It say\'s the antichrist (will not desire woman:s wishes) . I always thought Muslim;s, only Hung ,stoned, shot and disfigured their woman. being Christian or not, Woman should never be considered less, only equal, but different. I will have to agree with Hilary on this one. I find myself suprised by that!.
Women actually have more rights in Israel!

Israeli feminists refuse to give up rights accorded to women before the days of full equal rights, such as the right to retire earlier than men with a full state pension. Women are also not required to serve for the same length of time in the army or national service, or the undertaking of reserve duties. Just a couple of examples of equal rights in the state for less contribution to the state.
Furthermore, the likes of \"jeanne Mccarthy\" continue to read with their biased blinkers on, failing to note that both men and women can choose to use a bus service that caters to their lifestyle choices. There are alternative bus services for those who do not choose the same level of observance. It should also be noted that in some Jewish areas of the US, buses operate on the very same basis.
Judaism also demands less of women than men. It can be argued that Judaism puts women on a higher level than men! And the State of Israel certainly does. Even the supposed lesser religious role of women should be seen in terms of both maintaining balance of gender roles and responsibilities (private versus public spheres) and puts all the religious demands on men. No genital cutting required for women to enter into the Covenant of Abraham, either, which in Judaism is for no other reason than a blood sacrifice, which according to the Bible was commanded by G-d! No discussion about any alleged physical benefits of the practice by Jewish sages, either, only the physical drawbacks.
Maybe (ultra-Orthodox) Rabbi Boteach\'s statements that the Jews are a feminine people might tell you something. The problem with contemporary feminism is its origins and its constant demand for rights beyond what is equal, and its demand that women\'s rights be a superset of men\'s rights rather true equality.
What Jewish Law tries to do is deliver an equal balance of rights and responsibilities. What is to the outsider a patriarchal way of life puts more religious (public) rights/responsibilities in the hands of men and more family/home (private) rights/responsibilities in the hands of women. Outsiders tend to focus on what they can observe in the public sphere and ignore the private balance.
Of course there are always a minority of people of both genders that take advantage of their roles and the system under which they live, and much gets publicized about argued abuses, but Jewish Law is balanced and certainly does not and did not treat women as second-class citizens - although it does see men and women as having different roles and responsibilities, while according equal property rights, etc...thousands of years before women attained such rights in the so-called enlightened Western world.
Lastly, please note that democracy is not a Jewish system, and that it is far from perfect. Democratic (majority) rule can all too easily turn into rule of the mob. Minority rights are often subsumed. And let\'s not forget that women have an automatic majority. Unfortunately, democracy is showing its ugly side in the Arab world. Pan-Arab religious extremism is being empowered. In Israel it is the extremism of anti-national \'enlightenment/progressivism/liberalism\' - call it what you will - that is invariably winning the day. While in the USA, yet more anti-democratic legislation, the National Defense Authorization Act, will enable US citizens and other nationals to be kidnapped by the state without charge and even deported for torture. And the definition of a terrorist includes possessing more than seven days of food. Many more things to worry about than bogus charges of Jewish discrimination against women!
